AMLA / AMLR – the implementation starts today

With the launch of multiple RTS (Regulatory Technical Standards) consultations in Q2 2026, followed by further ones in Q3 and Q4 this year, the EU AML framework is entering a decisive phase. What was once a high-level rulebook is quickly translating into detailed, technical requirements that financial and non-financial institutions across the EU will need to transform into a new operational reality.

The upcoming RTS open for consultation in 2026 are as follows:

AMLA will deliver the RTS in two phases: first the financial sector (FS) followed by the non-financial sector (NFS).

Remember there are also several RTS that will be published without going through a consultation phase. More information on this, and the full scope of the RTS’, is available on the AMLA website.

What is important to take into consideration is the standard adoption process within the European Union: Once consultations close, AMLA will consolidate EU-wide market feedback, finalise the standards, and submit the final RTS for European Commission endorsement, followed by a No-Objection period before their publication in the EU Official Journal.

This is where the timeline becomes critical. 10th July 2027 is the hard deadline for regulatory and operational compliance, as per Regulation (EU) 2024/1624, of 31st May 2024.

10th July 2027 is a fixed date and deadline. What is not fixed is how much time the market will actually have to prepare and implement the new regulatory framework. The longer the RTS finalisation and approval process takes, the shorter the implementation window becomes.

Waiting for full clarity is no longer a viable strategy, as there are major changes ahead.

Firms that start early (structuring programmes, identifying gaps, redefining the written frameworks, mobilising resources, reviewing outsourcing models…) will be in a fundamentally stronger position than those that delay, and could capture better the harmonisation and simplification that could foster cost reduction and operational effectiveness.

AMLA readiness is becoming increasingly time-sensitive — and early action will be key.
